Places of interest

Information about the city of Varna can be found at http://www.varna-travel.com/.

The Varna Archaeological Museum (http://www.amvarna.com/) is one of the largest museums in Bulgaria outside the capital. It features objects from the prehistoric, Thracian, Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman periods of the region's history, as well as from the times of the medieval Bulgarian and Byzantine Empires, the Ottoman rule and the Bulgarian National Revival. The most famous exhibit of the Varna Archaeological Museum is the Gold of Varna, the oldest gold treasure in the world, excavated in 1972 and dating to 4600-4200 BC. Till the end of September this year a special temporary exhibition “Gods, Masks, People” is also displaced in the Archaeological Museum. It includes exhibits from 12 Bulgarian museums with selected displays of beliefs, worship and ways of life of ancient Thracian rulers, as well as Hellenic and Roman civilisations on Bulgarian land.

The museum also manages two archaeological objects: the large Roman baths in the city and the nearby medieval Aladzha Monastery.
